EXERCISE
WHAT’S UP?
Paw your knits, wind up your balls of yarn and start to reflect on your recent experience. Reflective practice is a great way of developing your own patterns of creative thinking, and its benefits can also spill over into other parts of your life. Answer the following question in your notebook under the day’s date: ‘What happened when you were knitting today?’
Try to describe the experience as best you can. How far did you come with your work? Did you make any design decisions? Did you solve any problems? What went through your mind?
Once you have clarified what happened, reflect on your memories. How did you feel? How did you deal with the practice? What thoughts did you have? What have you learned from the experience?
Theorizing on your reflections, start to think deeper. How did the experience compare with your preconceived ideas? Was the result of your labours expected or unexpected? Do you know any formal theories that relate to your experience? What could you have done differently to change the outcome?
Your theorizing can then lead to experimental thoughts. What could you do to change the way you work? How could you find a different design path? What kind of behaviour might you try out? As you grasp an experimental thought, do not worry about giving it a cohesive description straight away; a hunch can take you a long way. As you research around your hunch, clarity will come. The more you reflect on your practice, the more you will find answers and lessons in the most unexpected places, including the depths of your own mind.
